5 Signs Your Central Air Conditioner Needs Service

Air Conditioner RepairHere in the Twin Cities, we’ve experiences one of the hottest summers on record and with excessive heat warnings in effect throughout this intense heat wave, it is imperative to be aware of the signs that your central air conditioner needs service.

Not only is an inefficient air conditioner costly, but, if it breaks down in the kind of heat we’ve endured, it can be very serious.

Here are five signs to look out for:

1. Your home just is not getting cool. This is certainly the most noticeable sign that your central air conditioner has a problem. The solution could be something as simple as your unit needs refrigerant, or that the thermostat is not functioning properly. On the other hand, it may be that a new compressor is needed. Often, there is more that one explanation for a house that’s not cooling.

2. Your air conditioning unit is making strange noises. This could be an indicator of a bad condenser motor, the fan is out of balance or loose, or the compressor is starting to go.

3. Water is leaking from your air conditioning unit. If you have a water puddle around your unit, this is a sign that you have a leak, or that ice is forming inside. There are any number of sources for this problem. The drain line may be clogged, the unit could be freezing up, the coil could have a hole in it or there may be a leaky drain hose fitting.

4. An air conditioner that runs almost continuously. This can be an indication that the central air conditioner

system is undersized and more tonnage is required. It is a common problem that the unit is old and losing its efficiency or perhaps you need better insulation and windows or a new thermostat.

5. Your electric bill is too high. Even though we are in the middle of a heat wave, if you notice that your electric bill is much higher than it was last summer, this could still be a red flag that your air conditioner needs service.

This is not the time to have your central air conditioning system fail on you.
