Emergency: My Air Conditioner is Broken – What to Do Next

Finally, summer has come to Minnesota and with it predictably warm temps.  However, if your air conditioner fails, a call to an air conditioning repair professional might just be on the horizon, too. While you should not try to service your unit on your own, there are some things you can do that might get it running again.

Should your air conditioner decide to call it quits, check out these tips that can get it back on track:

  1. Make sure the unit is connected to power — First things first — The fix may be as simple as discovering if the unit is actually connected to a power source. If your house loses power, it’s best to turn off your air conditioner to protect it from damaging the compressor.
  2. Check the circuit breaker — Check the circuit breaker to your air conditioner to be sure it hasn’t been tripped by a power surge. Some central air conditioners have two circuits: one for the outside (condensing) unit and one for the blower unit; make sure to check them both.
  3. Check your filter — Sometimes the root of the problem may be a damaged or dirty filter. It’s an easy air conditioning repair task that can be done quickly — just make sure you know the exact size of your filter before purchasing a replacement. Local hardware stores traditionally carry filters for air conditioners, some department stores do as well.
  4. Call a Minneapolis air conditioning repair professional — A trained and certified team member may help diagnose the problem and can schedule a quick visit.
  5. Keep the family cool — If the temperature soars, consider taking the family to a movie theater or mall to stay cool.  Be sure everyone drinks lots of water — including pets!
  6. Set up a Minneapolis air conditioning maintenance schedule — Be prepared before the hottest day of the year. The perfect time to have a maintenance check is in the Spring when you are clearing away winter debris.  You have a better chance of avoiding a breakdown altogether when your unit is regularly examined.

If you have followed all of these steps and your air conditioning still fails to cool your home, call one of our Minneapolis air conditioning professionals for a visit.  To learn more about cooling and heating tips, visit our Welter Heating blog regularly and Like us on Facebook.
