How to Winterize an AC Unit

Winterizing your AC unit is essential, especially in places like Minnesota that experience long, harsh winters. When you take care of your AC unit, you can ensure it remains in good condition and performs optimally when you need it again for many summers to come.

It’s important to make sure that you prepare your AC unit for winter the right way. Let’s take a look at why this process is important and a step-by-step guide for how to get it done.

Why Winterizing Your AC Unit Is Important

Winterizing your AC unit is crucial for many reasons, including:

Preventing damage. When water inside the unit freezes, it expands, which can lead to cracks, leaks, and other kinds of damage. The condenser coils, pipes, and other components are vulnerable to this expansion, and repairing or replacing them can be costly. By winterizing your AC unit, you create a barrier against freezing temperatures and minimize the risk of damage caused by ice formation.

Extending the unit’s lifespan. Proper maintenance and protection during winter months can significantly contribute to extending the overall lifespan of your AC unit. By taking proactive measures to safeguard your unit, you reduce the chances of components wearing out or sustaining damage. Regular winterization ensures that your AC unit remains in optimal condition, allowing it to perform at peak levels throughout its lifespan and saving you money in the long run.

Enhancing energy efficiency and saving costs. Winterizing your AC unit can have a positive impact on your energy consumption and reduce heating costs. When an AC unit is not winterized, it can develop drafts and leaks that allow cold air to enter your home and warm air to escape. This forces your heating system to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature, leading to increased energy usage and higher utility bills.

Step-by-Step Guide to Winterizing Your AC Unit

Preparing your AC unit for winter is something you can do yourself. Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Turn off the power

Locate the main electrical disconnect for your AC unit, usually found near the outdoor unit. Switch it off to ensure no power flows to the system during the winterization process.

Step 2: Clean the outdoor unit

Clear any debris, leaves, or branches from around the unit. Trim nearby vegetation to maintain a clearance of at least two feet around the unit for proper airflow the following summer.

Step 3: Remove and clean the air filters

Remove the air filters from the indoor unit. Clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or replace them if they are disposable. Clean filters ensure optimal airflow and better indoor air quality when you turn your AC on again.

Step 4: Inspect the refrigerant lines

Inspect the refrigerant lines for any signs of damage or insulation wear. If you are not comfortable repairing or replacing them on your own, contact an expert

Step 5: Cover the outdoor unit

Using a waterproof cover or tarp, completely cover the outdoor unit. Ensure the cover is properly secured with bungee cords or straps. This protects the unit from snow, ice, and other winter elements.

Step 6: Insulate exposed pipes

If you have exposed pipes or fittings, insulate them with foam pipe insulation. This helps prevent any potential damage from the pipes freezing.

Step 7: Schedule professional maintenance

Schedule a professional maintenance service before winter sets in. Professional HVAC technicians can inspect your AC unit thoroughly, identify any potential issues, and perform any necessary repairs or adjustments before the season is through. This will help you get up and running faster next summer

Step 9: Monitor throughout the winter

Occasionally check the cover of your AC unit during the winter to ensure it remains secure. Also, keep an eye out for any new signs of damage or leaks around the unit. The sooner you spot a problem, the easier it will be to repair it, even in the winter.

These guys were my second call when my furnace stopped working properly. The first company I used sent a tech out who said the furnace needed to be replaced, and gave me a quote, but said he "jiggled a wire" and got it running again for the time being.

When it went out again the other day, I called Ray N. Welter. Their tech, Ralph, fixed the problem in half an hour. He told me the furnace is pretty old, but his fix should get me through the winter "and maybe a couple more," and then gave me a quote that was lower than the first company.

These guys are rad.

Furnace stopped working. When that happens after hours you learn a lot about companies. Today I called RW and got a person on the phone that knows about furnaces and he dispatched a service person Phil within 2 hours. I called them based on personal refer and reviews. They are excellent. Despite having a very old furnace it was the second time that this company said I did not need to replace. If I did replace it I want a Trane and RW would do to the work. For now I will call them for fall/spring tune ups and love that they don't have the club memberships etc. Just good solid customer service for all customers. A really ++ experience. Family run business with integrity.

If you need superior service this is your company!!! We were in Florida experiencing our first year as "snowbirds" when our furnace (in Bloomington) stopped working. Rick Welter personally took our call and not only sent a technician to our cold home, but checked on it for the next two days until our new heating unit could be properly installed. Phenomenal service!

In addition to the great service, their pricing was very competitive. I highly recommend this company for all of your heating or A/C needs!!!
