There are a lot of options out there when it comes to hiring an HVAC professional. It can be overwhelming to sift through all the selections and find the right fit. Luckily, there are some questions you can ask along the way to make it easier. Here’s our guide on how to hire HVAC technicians, plus what to expect before and during a visit.
Questions for HVAC Professionals
One of the best ways to hire the right HVAC professional for your home is by interviewing them a bit. No, this doesn’t have to be a super formal inquiry, but asking the right questions will help in the hiring process.
Are you licensed and insured?
First things first, you need to make sure an HVAC professional has all the credentials they need to get the job done. The last thing you want is a technician who is not qualified or doesn’t have the proper insurance in place.
What type of inspections do you offer before service?
Before you have your HVAC serviced, you’ll want the HVAC professional to inspect your system. It’s good to know how much they will inspect. Will they only look at your furnace, or will they check out your ducts too? Look for a technician who will examine the whole HVAC system to treat the problem.
What do you think the issue is?
This sounds obvious, but it’s a good question to ask. For one, it helps you and your HVAC professional get on the same page. Additionally, it will flag if someone is trying to sell you extra things. A good HVAC technician will focus on what you need rather than trying to upgrade you.
What brands do you work with?
You may have a specific brand you want to install or need your HVAC professional to be an expert on your existing appliance.
What is the energy efficiency of a new system?
Making your home energy efficient is good for the environment and saves you money on energy bills. Finding an HVAC professional that works with Energy Star approved appliances will help get your home outfitted with appliances that are eco-friendly for the long haul.
What are the warranties or guarantees?
It’s good to know what happens if your HVAC continues to have issues after it’s fixed. Knowing that the HVAC professional will be there to help when you hit road bumps is key. Plus, you want to make sure they are working with appliances that have warranties to save you money if anything goes wrong.
Do you handle permits for jobs?
For larger jobs, make sure your HVAC professional can handle permits. This is a headache you don’t want to deal with on your own.
How long will it take to complete the job?
Timelines are important. Yes, your HVAC professional might be qualified, but it’s important that they also can deliver results in a timely fashion. If you want a project done by a certain time, let them know.
Are you available 24/7?
You never know what’s going to happen with the weather when you’re getting your HVAC fixed or replaced. Working with HVAC professionals that can be reached 24/7 means that if something goes wrong, you won’t be left hanging.
Is anything not included in the quote?
You don’t want to be hit later with hidden charges. Make sure the HVAC professional you’re working with gives you a clear idea of all the costs. This will help you accurately compare quotes and prepare a budget.
When can you start?
An HVAC professional can tick all the boxes, but above all, they need to be available when you need them. If you need a project done fast and they can’t start for months, then you’ll know it’s not a match.
What to Expect from an HVAC Professional
Once you’ve decided on which HVAC professional you’re going to move forward with, you can expect a few things before and during an appointment.
Before an appointment, an HVAC professional should:
- Talk through the issue you’re having over the phone
- Set up a time to come out and look
- Give your a rough estimate on costs
- Outline what they offer in services
During an appointment, you can expect an HVAC professional to:
- Evaluate the HVAC system
- Discuss any concerns they come across
- Update you on the state of your HVAC system
- Establish next steps (maintenance, replacement, etc.)
You’re Hired!
You’ve got a firm grip on how to hire HVAC technicians now. You can go confidently and know that you have all the tools to find the right HVAC professional for the job. And, of course, if you don’t want to look too far, give us a call today! We’re available 24/7 for all your HVAC needs.

These guys were my second call when my furnace stopped working properly. The first company I used sent a tech out who said the furnace needed to be replaced, and gave me a quote, but said he "jiggled a wire" and got it running again for the time being.
When it went out again the other day, I called Ray N. Welter. Their tech, Ralph, fixed the problem in half an hour. He told me the furnace is pretty old, but his fix should get me through the winter "and maybe a couple more," and then gave me a quote that was lower than the first company.
These guys are rad.

Furnace stopped working. When that happens after hours you learn a lot about companies. Today I called RW and got a person on the phone that knows about furnaces and he dispatched a service person Phil within 2 hours. I called them based on personal refer and reviews. They are excellent. Despite having a very old furnace it was the second time that this company said I did not need to replace. If I did replace it I want a Trane and RW would do to the work. For now I will call them for fall/spring tune ups and love that they don't have the club memberships etc. Just good solid customer service for all customers. A really ++ experience. Family run business with integrity.

If you need superior service this is your company!!! We were in Florida experiencing our first year as "snowbirds" when our furnace (in Bloomington) stopped working. Rick Welter personally took our call and not only sent a technician to our cold home, but checked on it for the next two days until our new heating unit could be properly installed. Phenomenal service!
In addition to the great service, their pricing was very competitive. I highly recommend this company for all of your heating or A/C needs!!!
