What To Do If Your Trane Heater Is Not Working

Person changing air filter on an HVAC systemOnce fall and winter hit, it’s time to get cozy at home. While blankets, hot tea, and candles all help set the indoor ambiance,  our furnaces are really what keep us warm throughout the cold days.

When it comes to furnaces, we think Trane natural gas furnaces can’t be beat. They tend to last nearly 20 years, they are about as efficient as you can get, and are all around tried and true furnaces. But even the best furnace acts up from time to time. So, if your Trane heater isn’t working, here are some ways to get it back and running for all your snug nights at home.

My Trane Heater Isn’t Working!

If you find that your Trane heater isn’t working, the signs will be fairly obvious. If your furnace isn’t turning on, that’s a big sign that something is wrong. You also may find that it does turn on, but no heat comes out. In these cases, it’s good to troubleshoot to see if you can fix the problem on your own.

Replace the Filter

One of the reasons your Trane heater isn’t working could be because of blockages caused by your air filter. Made to keep dust and debris particles out of your air, over time, they can get clogged. If this is the case, try replacing your air filter to see if that will fix the problem.

Check the Switch

Sometimes the issue with a Trane heater not working can be traced to electricity. Something may have caused it to short-circuit or turn off on its own. In these instances, be sure to check the power switch. If it was turned off, turning it back on should solve the problem.

If the switch is on and there’s no power, try checking the circuit breaker. If the circuit for the heater is tripped, flip it back to the on position. If it trips again soon after you flipped it back on, there may be bigger problems happening and you should call us to come take a look.

Check the Pilot Light

If your Trane heater is powered by gas, take a look at your pilot light. If your furnace isn’t working and the pilot light is out, try relighting it. Turn the knob for the pilot light off and then on again. This should restart your furnace and get it heating again.

Check the Gas Valve

If turning the pilot light on and off doesn’t work, then check the gas valve. Your heater has two gas valves, one for the pilot light and one that powers the furnace. You can check the service panel on the heater to see if the gas valve is working or not.

When to Call a Professional

After doing your do-diligence, if you aren’t able to fix your Trane heater on your own, it’s time to call a professional. However, there are two other reasons you should call a professional immediately:

  1. If you smell gas – You may smell a little gas from your heater when you turn it on for the season. That’s normal. But if the gas smell lingers, it could mean you have a gas leak. First, leave your house, call 911, and get in touch with a heating expert. A gas leak is hazardous and your safety is the first priority in this situation.
  2. If you hear unusual noises – Your Trane heater should not be making loud noises. Hissing or banging sounds are a red flag that something could be wrong with the electrical in your furnace. Reach out to an expert ASAP to help you sort it out.
